June 16th Smell the Roses Ride

Pat and Al

Four tandem teams and a gutsy single rider (whose captain was off doing service in other ways) had a pleasant and FLAT ride (except for one “significant” hill) on a rather grey Saturday morning. Fortunately the rain gods were only able to produce a few sprinkles so it was a dry ride, a decided improvement over the previous Saturday’s very wet ride in the Amity area. It was an out and back trip from Champoeg State Park to St. Paul along River Road with a stop at the heirloom rose garden. Heirloom roses do have a lovely aroma and the garden is a real find in such an off-the-beaten-track location.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the ride, the roses, the almost traffic-free roads and some good and interesting conversation. We were all able to stay for a picnic lunch afterward at the park where we were even blessed by the sun gods.

June 9th Tandem Rally Test Ride

Marinus and Renee

Marinus and Renee led this ride, starting at the town park in Amity, which is one of the proposed rest stops. Karen and Gary Gitnor also participated in the ride. (This 23 mile ride is a subset of the Medium length Southern route.) After leaving Amity in light rain, we headed to Dayton via SR-233, then looped south back to Amity.

The 1 mile section on Highway 99 leaving Amity had a broad shoulder and was lightly travelled. The stretch on SR-233 (Amity-Dayton Hwy) had the roughest set of pavement and the narrowest shoulder. Traffic was light, about 8 cars passed on the 10 mile section. Karen commented that was about what they experienced in Yakima on some of the routes. Once in Dayton, we skipped the rest areas and turned south on Webfoot for several miles of rolling hills with almost no traffic. We turned onto Finn and then Lafayette road and started our return. A final turn onto Amity Road east of the Lafayette highway had a challenging hill, but a flat spot in the middle of the climb and a nice glide back down. Traffic on this section was the busiest and fastest, but drivers were accommodating. Marinus and Renee experienced a flat tire one block from the end of the ride. As the bikes were loaded onto the cars, it started raining heavily. We stopped at Harvest Fresh on 3rd Ave in McMinnville for some hot soup.

This concludes the checkout of 2 of 8 proposed NWTR 2008 rides. 5 rides still need a checkout.

The link below describes each of the rides.

Another ride report for the same ride!

On Sat. June 9th, Renee, Marinus, Karen and Gary shared a wonderful 23 mile ride in Amity.  We rode over hill and dale (doable hills) passed farms and dairies, over paved and mostly paved roads---IN THE POURING RAIN!!!!  Upon our return to Amity, we had an inch of water in our shoes, were shivering cold, and had a good laugh.  We had lunch at Harvest Fresh--hot soup, hot tea, and a place to get dry.

So, for all of you who stayed dry inside, it was a really good ride, and will be a wonderful part of next year’s rally.
